What’s wrong with diet soda?

Diet sodas are popular worldwide for those of us wishing to enjoy a sweet, bubbly beverage without all the added sugar. Manufacturers of diet soda replace sugar content found in regular sodas with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, and cyclamate. Soda companies have a diet version of every sugary drink that they produce, and many of us reach for these beverages on a daily basis.

Diet soda was first introduced in the 1950s as a popular alternative to sugary drinks, and the claim at the time was that they were healthier than their fully loaded counterparts. Despite the fact that they contain no calories and are free from sugar, numerous studies have been conducted attesting to their destructive nature on our health. They may taste good and satisfy thirst, but every sip you take is detrimental to your health and wellbeing. Let’s take a look at what’s wrong with diet soda:

It has no nutritional value

This mixture of carbonated water, artificial sweetener, and artificial color has little to no nutritional value whatsoever. Recipes may vary from brand to brand, but most varieties are a combination of the following ingredients:

  • Carbonated water
  • Artificial sweetener
  • Acid for added tartness
  • Artificial colors and flavorings
  • Preservatives
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Caffeine

Any added nutritive value is purely for marketing purposes; these substances are not naturally nutritious, and it is rare to find one that meets any sort of nutritional requirement.

Diet soda does not aid in weight loss

Some may think that the zero-calorie option is attractive for those of us wishing to lose a few pounds, but in actually the artificial sweetener contained in most diet sodas is counterproductive to this goal. Several studies have now proven that the use of artificial sweeteners actually increases the risk for development of metabolic disorders and obesity. One study even linked increased diet soda consumption to the onset of type 2 Diabetes. When you consider these alarming statistics, it seems that healthier choices must be made when we consider beverages.

Diet soda has been linked to heart disease

Studies recently done on artificial sweeteners show that just one serving of sweetener daily increases the chances for development of high blood pressure, a precursor to heart disease. Heart health is of utmost importance as we age; cutting back on these additional servings of artificial sweetener are an essential piece of reclaiming cardiovascular health.

Diet soda is destructive on teeth and gums

Due to the overly acidic nature of diet soda, it is known to cause erosion of tooth enamel and increase the risk for tooth decay. Over time, excessive decay leads to gum disease and other oral health issues. Excessive amounts of bacteria in the mouth can quickly enter our bloodstream and cause other health issues as well.

Should I drink diet soda?

With the studies showing diet soda’s lack of nutritional value and its alarming effects on different processes in the body, we would all benefit from healthier choices when drinking. Opt instead for fresh vegetable and fruit juices, nut milk, and fresh, clean water for optimal health. You deserve to have better health and wellness: cut back on the soda, and watch how your health improves.
